Un Homme de Parole: Hommage à René Berger

This collection includes contributions from the late René Berger, Jean-Claude Badoux, Jacqueline Dousson, Gilbert Coutaz, Solange Ghernaouti-Hélie, Madeleine Gobeil, Yvette Jaggi, Francis Lapique, Jacques Monnier-Raball, Geneviève Morand, Basarab Nicolescu, Jean Otth, Claude Ritschard, Louis Schneiter, Alain Theilkaes, Michel Thévoz, and a biography/bibliography compiled by Jeannine Gabriel.

A professor of literature at the University of Lausanne, Switzerland, and at the Sorbonne in Paris.  René Berger was a philosopher and art historian, a visionary, leader, producer of television documentaries and avid writer, publishing books as well as contributing to scientific journals and regularly blogging.

Few personalities of our country have managed to reach an audience as global as did René Berger (1921-2009). “Découverte de la peinture”, and “Connaissance de la peinture” are two of his works that have been translated into most European languages, are available in America, and even in Japan. These books are the source of a series of television programs broadcast throughout the world.

Undisciplined, like his friend Edgar Morin, Berger always refused to be considered a specialist. Anticipatory first and foremost, adopting a forward looking perspective on new technologies, computers and Internet in particular. Not to mention his poetry, his novel, “L’Homme-annexe”, and collections of aphorisms.

As eloquent as a great moral rectitude, René Berger is truly “un homme de parole”.
