Julien de l'Essert - Roger Jaunin

This novel relates a harsh and rough country.  A world where passions are communicated through rough and awkward silences imbued with alcohol. Julian, raised in the country, dreams of horses and space. A trip to Texas to learn English and become a basketball player leads to his discovery of horses. He exports four with the intention of starting "ranch"  and to offer horse riding on the family farm. The novel explores the waves of bitterness experienced by the author, the dark passages in life which are so often exacerbated by relationships. Love's brutal intoxication, tender yet able to wound, and finally break. The authors final return to America after his ranch was closed for administrative reasons. The raw style reflects the harshness of both family and social relationships.
